Indulge your passion for good food and fine wines

Aziza Young (Chef Z)

I was born in West Philly, but when I was 4 years old my parents moved us to Cheltenham, and that’s where I got my education. I grew up loving food. So much so that my nickname was Ms. Piggy. I started cooking at the tender age of 9 years old. What made me start cooking was just the simple fact that I wanted to eat, and I didn’t feel like waiting for someone to cook for me. What kept me cooking was my love for food and my Pop-Pop; he was an Executive Chef with his own catering business. Whenever I had a crazy recipe he encouraged me to try it. My Pop-pop was my muse. Sadly, he passed away when I was 16, and for a while I didn’t want to cook anymore.

It wasn’t until I met my husband that I started cooking again. He loves lasagna and Macaroni and Cheese, and I wanted to make sure I made the best he EVER tasted. My husband then became my muse. He was the reason I started cooking again.

In my early twenties I would cater dinner parties at people homes. Then in 2007 I moved to Harrisburg. I noticed people didn’t like the type of food I was cooking, but they did like the pastries. So I had to reteach myself how to bake. For years I made cakes, pies, and whatever else people wanted; anything that kept me cooking.

In 2013 I started my own catering business called Mesu Food, and I’ve been striving for perfection ever since.

In 2014 I was cast on FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen, and I got the chance to work with one of the greatest Chefs alive, Chef Gordon Ramsay. It was a unique experience for a lack of a better word. I took what I learned from the show and not only applied it to my food, but also to my life. Every day I try to be a better person than I was the day before, and it was Hell’s Kitchen that taught me that.

Currently I am the Executive Chef at St. Benjamin’s Brewing Company. I’m also a Private Chef. I do Pop-ups around the city of Philadelphia and surrounding cities. I also cater. Food is my passion. Eating is my love.
